Adele, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne have been announced as the first performers for the MTV Video Music Awards, which will air Aug. 28 from Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre.

For Adele, whose sophomore full-length "21" is the best-selling album of the year, the performance will be her debut on the MTV VMAs stage. The British singer is tied with Kanye West for the second-most nominations with seven, while Katy Perry leads all nominations with nine. Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" will compete against the Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise," Perry's "Firework," Bruno Mars' "Grenade" andTyler, the Creator's "Yonkers" for Video of the Year.

Meanwhile, Wayne will take the stage one day before his highly anticipated new album, "Tha Carter IV," hits stores after months of delays. Weezy performed a medley of his tracks "Don't Get It," "A Milli" and "Got Money" at the 2008 ceremony.

Brown has also delivered a show-stopping performance at the VMAs before, when he broke out some dance moves while singing "Wall to Wall" and "Kiss Kiss" at the 2007 awards. After hitting No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with "F.A.M.E." last March, the R&B singer drew huge crowds at his "Today Show," hit the studio with Justin Bieber and recently announced a fall tour with Kelly Rowland.

A tribute to Amy Winehouse, who passed away on Saturday (July 23), is another possibility for the MTV VMAs, according to MTV executive vice president of music and talent Amy Doyle. "We don't know yet, but certainly she is top of mind, in our thoughts and in our hearts," Doyle tells the Associated Press.
