Adele has broken a record set by Lady GaGa with her sophomore album 21.

The 'Rolling In The Deep' singer's album has now become the biggest-selling digital record in the UK, overtaking Lady GaGa's The Fame, according to Music Week.

The news comes as cumulative sales of digital music in the UK passed £1 billion last year, with £316.5 million being spent in 2010 alone.

New figures show that consumers spent £132m on digital singles last year, with digital sales now representing 98.7% of all singles sold.

"British music fans enjoy the world's most competitive and innovative digital music scene, propelling all-time sales of digital singles and albums past the £1bn mark," said BPI CEO Geoff Taylor.

"The strength of British music means there is fantastic potential for further growth."

However, the market remains split between digital and physical formats in other areas, with 58.5% of consumers buying physical products in 2010, while 17.2% exclusively purchased digital editions. Just under a quarter of all music consumers bought both.

The BPI has also revealed that the average album price has dropped by 4.3% compared to 2009 and currently stands at £7.32, meaning the price of an album has decreased by £3.45 over the last ten years.

Amazon recently announced that Adele's 21 has become the most downloaded title from their store ever.

Sales of the British star's second studio record also helped boost the UK music sales market in the first quarter of 2011.
